Kia Mārō Me Matiu is a celebratory walk linking the key places where Matt is respected and loved, bringing together the communities of which he remains an influential part.
We started on Thursday 21 September with an early breakfast at South Coast Gym, crossing Sussex to break the journey overnight at East Grinstead RFC. Friday morning we hit the road to Croydon, en route to Westminster and New Scotland Yard. Saturday brought a gentle riverside stroll to the finish line at London Irish RFC Sunbury, where the Foundation hosted a lunch and fundraising event to mark 3 years since we lost Matt, alongside a presentation on our work, entertainment and all World Cup matches shown live.
What our walkers achieved was amazing, walking approximately 90 miles in the 3 days and rounded off by an excellent reception at London Irish. It was an incredible way to celebrate the memory of Matt, visiting where he was loved, drinking what he drank and watching what we all love - rugby!
If you're interested in finding out more or interested in hosting a charity event of your own please contact donations@mattratanarugby.foundation, to see how you can get involved!
We think it’s important to do justice to Matt’s home tongue, you may have therefore noticed a change to our walk’s name.
We consulted with a Māori linguist and this is the preferred translation for the message we tried to convey;
Kia mārō me Matiu - be determined/resolute like/in the way/ Matt was.
